It’s not often that we find a successful business owner or entrepreneur who lacks purpose and impact behind their vision. Each and every highly successful individual in the business world launched a business that has either solved a problem or answered a need that consumers may or may not have even realized they had. It’s often heavily emphasized that there is a strong power behind knowing your purpose as an individual, and this too is true as it pertains to business. When your purpose is known and established, you are able to better understand how you directly impact the world through your respected consumers.
Let’s rewind and define the words purpose and impact.
Purpose is defined as, “a reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists”.
Speaking briefly from an individual standpoint, we are all created uniquely by the hand of God, each with a very specific God-given purpose. The road to finding our purpose as an individual is often tough, but once found, our eyes are opened in a new and extraordinary way. This is the same as it relates to our businesses. If we create a business that lacks purpose, we will never operate in our full capacity as a business owner or entrepreneur. A lack of purpose can also result in the failure of the business.
As a business owner seeking to create a business that is impactful, you must first begin by establishing your ‘WHY’. When we take the extra step to establish our why, we are intentional about creating a powerful and purposeful business. Before we move on, what is your why? What fuels the ambition that you have for your respected business? Is it meant to solve a problem or fill a need? Establishing your why creates a clear goal behind your business and aids in keeping the purpose of the business at the forefront of your mind.
Now let’s talk about impact. In the noun form, it is defined as, “the action of one object coming forcibly into contact with another”. In its verb form impact is defined as, “having a strong effect on someone or something.”
If you’ve ever visited Chick-Fil-A then you can agree that the customer service while there leaves a lasting and impactful first impression. The same can be said as it relates to any business that is often frequented by you. Many consumers have a buyer’s preference according to the impact that is experienced while doing business there. With that being said, knowing and showing your purpose as a business owner can significantly impact your business, especially if you are a Christian business owner.
In a world of heavy comparison, we often measure our success against that of those around us…or those we have deemed as competition. However, as a KINGDOM-minded business owner, we should know that there is no competition in the KINGDOM business. We are all working together to glorify God in our work by serving others. When you know and understand the purpose behind why you do what you do, then you are more focused on the impact that you can have and not on a perceived threat from your competition.
Showing your purpose helps impact your consumers in a way that is uncommon. Exhibiting the power of purpose and impact through your business will show that you are more focused on what God has called you to do through your business. In return, your customers are able to feel your love, care, concern, and support. This way, the feelings that business owners are “just trying to make a dollar” no longer exist. A lot of barriers are broken when a part of your purpose is to serve people. Even larger barriers are broken when you are transparent in showing your purpose and explaining how doing so has impacted those you’ve served in the past.
Lastly, when you know the purpose and impact your business can have on those you serve, you are no longer just another business owner trying to expand your income. Your business becomes your ministry in a way that is more relatable to the world outside of the church. When you show purpose and make an impact, your clients will always speak well on your behalf. You will also create a meaningful and powerful experience that will have customers returning to you over and over again.
